"You know Ms. Evens, as pretty as that dress is and it is lovely by the way but I was thinking of something a bit more masculine for this year. Now don’t get me wrong because you’re absolutely right about it being the perfect costume! I mean what boy wouldn’t want to wear that? The thing is … Well, it’s just not me!" Brent said with his voice dripping with sarcasm.

He was holding the slips she’d handed him, his mother the dress itself and Ms. Brent still holding the shoes, socks and wig. A human hair wig she had said with a note of importance in her voice adding that it was naturally blond besides. As if that was suppose to get Brent all fuzzy inside. The woman had gone off the deep end decades ago and why he had to humor her was anybody’s guess but that look his mother had at that second suggested he try harder.

"It really is pretty Ms. Brent and I honestly will think about using it for the Halloween Party." Brent said toning his voice down and dropping the sarcasm. His mother gave an almost imperceptible nod of approval and another crisis passed. A few more minutes here and this too, Brent realized with no small amount of relief, would also pass.

He was there with his mother after his mother had mentioned Brent’s party and he still needing a costume for it. Unfortunately his mother was sitting next to Ms. Evens in the beauty parlor. That same Ms. Evens who had played such famous roles as Baby Alice and the Fuzzy Rabbit. All on stage and all long before movies had sound or color and Brent couldn’t imagine that. Nor could he imagine him in a girl’s costume he told his mother.

Ms. Evens, had called Brent’s mother a couple of days later all excited because she had found some of her things and measured them and she was sure Brent could wear them. Of course she had been so chubby back then but of course that was her claim to fame. Fame that hand’t lasted nearly as long as she had Brent thought and cursed his mother again for taking the invitation.

He had only agreed to go when his mother suggested it, for the sake of civility and only because she used that tone that meant no discursion. They just go, have tea, look at what she had then leave. Where’s the harm in that his mother asked. So he went and sat on a chair he could have sworn was in a museum he’d gone to, drank tea like some damn sissy while the famous toddler Baby Evens showed off her outfits.

It was almost over as Brent looked down at his tea cup wondering if you really could read that gunk. He wasn’t focusing at all on the slips in his lap or the dress his mother held until he heard his mother say: "You know, that might be a good idea."

"What?" Brent asked looking up and fighting the yawn that was coming over him.

"Trying these things on. Ms. Evens is concerned that if you decide to wear them and they don’t fit it might be too late to get another costume." His mother said looking as trapped as he was suddenly feeling. She shrugged slightly then added a twisted little smile hinting that she might not have thought about this.

"Ah mom … I’d like to actually but don’t we have to shop still? The market closes early on Saturdays. Remember?" Brent said making an excuse he was sure his mother would pick up on.

Brent’s mother was on the verge of doing just that when she saw Ms. Evens face. That woman had no one and little to do but remember what she had done years ago and Brent’s mother wondered how long had it been since she even had company. She simply couldn’t do it. If it meant he’d have to try on a silly little dress and it was a costume anyway then so be it.

"No, we can go anytime. I think Ms. Evens is right honey. It might not fit and it’s better to know that now before it’s too late." His mother said.

Brent wanted to shake his head clear. Actually he suddenly wanted to toss that little slip from his lap and maybe even run but not before he would ring his mother’s neck. "What?" He asked making sure he’d just heard what he’d heard.

"It’s a costume and it may not fit! So let’s go try it on and see if it fits! OK?" His mother said slowly and with a purpose that suggested he again not argue. He dropped his head. It was as close to a nod as he could get given the circumstances. His mother relaxed noticeably and Ms. Evens smiled broadly at the prospects of company staying longer than the monthly visit her case worker made.

His mother walked behind with Ms. Evens leading to a room that looked very much like a museum of memorabilia and all of Ms. Evens when she was a girl. A very young girl and worse he saw the picture of the dress his mother was holding. She really was big back then he thought looking at the other players dressed for the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on the same stage as her.

Everything went on the day bed sitting under the window before Ms. Evens slid an old tall dresser opened. She moved through what looked like panties but far thicker befo

who am I going to watch football with now? number 1 (Nyla) is a girl, number 2 (TBD) is also going to be a girl. Well the fantastic news is that girls are cuter than boys, if the second one is anywhere as good as the first one this will be easy, and we have tons of clothes that she can wear already 🙂 And since Nyla doesn’t seem to be interested in cars I have one more chance to groom the first female F1 driver ever in #2. (PS: this is a picture of a piece of paper in an envelope from the doctor that we had her write down the sex of the baby since i was traveling in China and couldn’t be there when we found out – so this way we could all find out together!)
